– 2 cups milk (whole or 2%) – 1/2 cup heavy cream – 1 cup high-quality dark chocolate, chopped – 2 tablespoons sugar (optional) – 1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract – Pinch of salt – Whipped cream or marshmallows for topping

In a medium saucepan, combine the milk and heavy cream. Warm over medium heat until it begins to steam, but not boiling.
Add the chopped dark chocolate, sugar (if using), and a pinch of salt to the pan.
Stir continuously until the chocolate has completely melted into the milk and the mixture is smooth and creamy.
Remove from the heat and stir in the vanilla extract.
Serve in mugs topped with whipped cream or marshmallows.
